Restaurant Reservation Scalping Site Is Everything Wrong with SF (Kevin Montgomery/Gawker)

Restaurant Reservation Scalping Site Is Everything Wrong with SF

There are two things startups shouldn't fuck with in San Francisco. One is parking, and the other is restaurants. San Francisco is, after all, a city of foodies. Techies write bots to score competitive reservations. Foodies stand two hours in the rain waiting for day-old New York bagels. Now a startup is drawing fire for trying to capitalize off that love.

ReservationHop bills itself as a service that "[makes] reservations at the hottest restaurants in advance so you don't have to." The service scrapes advance reservation systems to fill up its inventory and sells them back to users for "as little as $5." In other words, they're scalping dinner reservations.

The startup operates in such an unofficial gray area, they even inform customers "After payment, we'll give you the name to use when you arrive at the restaurant."

Restaurant Reservation Scalping Site Is Everything Wrong with SF

Of course, the service is effectively capturing money away from restaurants—one of the most famously risky businesses out there. And the situation is made worse by the fact they are making empty reservations to sell, creating situations in which Reservation Hop's unsold "inventory" could result in empty tables.

As one chef, Hapa Ramen's Richie Nakano put it, "This is disgusting and hurtful to restaurants that already operate on razor thin margins."

Nakano further elaborates in an email:

An app like that, while not breaking any rules or laws per se, has the potential to be hurtful to small businesses that rely on having a reservation book full of diners that actually show up. What happens to the reservations that no one winds up buying? This is a perfect example of tech trying to "disrupt" something without thinking of the consequences. I hate this idea. It's awful and selfish and if it was my restaurant I would check that site everyday to see if my place were listed there so I could delete those reservations.

Richie isn't alone. The initial feedback on Twitter is not good:

This is irresponsible and sleazy and exactly what people hate about startups sucking the life out of San Francisco https://t.co/pqz572FWA9

Android Wear gives us a glimpse at what home automation with an iWatch should look like

10459926_718121821581836_7925877939534352337_n_1403039422

Home automation, a category more broadly referred to as the “internet of things,” is almost surely going to be a large and growing market in the coming years. And while Apple’s recently announced entry is the forthcoming HomeKit platform, Google has yet to announce anything exactly equivalent. At I/O 2014, however, Google did announce its plan for Nest, and shed much more light on its Android Wear smartwatch operating system.

Today, an Android developer demoed a system that he already has working which brings home automation to Android Wear. While HomeKit intends to give developers an easy way to connect their apps to partnering hardware manufacturers, Google’s system (or lack thereof) is much more open-ended. In this example, hardware from DroidCK paired with apps that are already in the Play Store work almost seamlessly with an out-of-the-box Samsung Gear Live smartwatch, taking what was already an Android-powered home automation system and extending it to a wearable with little additional work.

The Android Wear device can control devices through Google Now commands as well as on-screen buttons:

Home automation systems aren’t exactly new, and products like Philips Hue lightbulbs and the Nest thermostat have been controllable via our smartphones for quite some time. What we’re only just recently seeing with smartwatches like the Pebble and now Android Wear devices, is this concept becoming much more feasible and readily accessed when it’s needed. Pulling our your phone, unlocking it, and navigating to an app to turn off your lights may actually be less convenient than manually hitting a wall switch a few feet away. But being able to say “Ok Google, turn off the lamp” might be a completely different story.

Google showed us this in an Android Wear promotional video earlier this year:

The rumored Apple iWatch, which is seemingly already being tested by pro athletes, is rumored to have a number of sensors for monitoring health information, and that information will almost surely tie in with HealthKit. But the other big “Kit” that Apple announced at WWDC, HomeKit, seems to also fittingly tie in with a wearable wrist device. That device being an iWatch would mean that the experience we see announced later this year may not be too far off from what we see in the video above.

Comparable to Google’s plan for its Nest brand, Apple just might be building its own “mainstream” smarthome hardware, which would in theory tie the system together from end to end and generally give Apple control over the entire experience. While there’s no way of knowing what specific kind of hardware Apple is working on, lightbulbs, thermostats, and smoke detectors are definitely some of the most obvious candidates. In line with Apple’s no-fragmentation philosophy, all of these Apple-made devices controlled with an Apple-made iWatch would, in theory, be a great solution for home automation.

Facebook Becomes A Local Party Discovery Tool With "Events For You" Redesign (Josh Constine/TechCrunch)

Just because you weren’t invited, doesn’t mean Facebook can’t help you crash the party. Facebook Events on the web got a slick visual overhaul today that includes a new “Events For You” tab that recommends gatherings it thinks you’ll enjoy, even if no one invited you, friends aren’t going, and you’ve never been to the venue. Rather than just being a calendar of your invites and a few suggestions based on what friends are doing, Facebook is now applying everything it knows about you to get you out of the house and somewhere fun…where you can take photos and post them to Facebook.

After we spotted the unannounced redesign today, Facebook confirmed to me it’s testing it with some users globally before a mid-paced rollout to everyone in the coming weeks. A similar design for Events will be coming to Android and iOS later this year too. You can see how it looks on web above.

Events Redesign

The main Events feed now has a much cleaner, more condensed, iOS7-ish feel to it. A tabbed interface lets you quickly jump back and forth between All your events, Invites, events you’ve “Saved” but not RSVP’d to, and ones you’re “Hosting”. A shortcut on the right lets you hop immediately into past events or the creation flow. The design makes it much easier to manage invites because they get a dedicated space, instead of being meshed in with ones you’ve already accepted or declined.

But what’s really important here is Facebook’s concentration on Event discovery. The new “Events For Your” section on the right sidebar that can be opened into a list has more suggestions based on a lot more data. A Facebook spokesperson tells me “The recommendations you see are based on the information you have shared with Facebook (i.e., Pages you like, groups and communities you’re a part of, events that friends are attending), and other relevant contextual information such as day of the week and location.”

Facebook Events For You

Essentially, Facebook can look at an Event, assess what it’s about and who is already going, and use that demographic and interest data to match it to more potential attendees. This is much more powerful than when Facebook dipped its toes into recommendations back in 2011. Facebook Events will now compete with a host of Event discovery apps ranging from catch-all services like YPlan, Applauze, Fever, and Eventful to focused ones like WillCall, Seatwave, and StubHub’s Showdrift for music and Sosh for cultural events. Bafflingly, Eventbrite still does a mediocre job of event recommendations despite having such a strong database of local happenings.

Facebook’s push into event discovery could be big for a few reasons. First, I think this looks rich enough to become its own standalone app. Some people aren’t avid News Feed readers and do their messaging elsewhere, but they have to use Facebook because of Events. Otherwise, their meatspace social life could suffer.

WillCall and Applauze take a highly stylized approach to Event discovery, compared to Facebook's utilitarian approach

WillCall and Applauze take a highly stylized approach to Event discovery, compared to Facebook’s utilitarian approach

CEO Mark Zuckerberg told me in an on-stage interview last year that certain Facebook features buried in its interface like Groups would benefit from having their own standalone apps, and I think this applies to Events as well. He said “…if you have something like Groups, it’s always going to be kind of second-class in the main Facebook app, or even messaging for that matter. In order to make these things really be able to reach their full potential, I do think over time we’re going to have to create more specific experiences.” An Events app that helped you find fun things to do around you as well as manage your invites could be a killer tool you can’t get elsewhere.

There’s also a ton of monetization potential in event discovery. Concert halls, conferences, clubs, and bars might very well be willing to pay to get their events injected into Facebook’s suggestions.

While it might seem counter-intuitive, getting people off the computer and out on the town is productive for Facebook. Events are where you meet friends that strengthen Facebook’s social graph, and take photos to share back, and interact with Businesses you could Like. If Facebook can be the portal to fun IRL experiences, it will win a place in your heart.

And finally, Events help Facebook achieve its mission to connect people, and fights the perception that it actually isolates us. The Events feature has quietly become one of the social network’s most critical over the years. Seems Facebook is finally ready to celebrate it.

Bruce Schneier and other security experts believe code leaks originate from a NSA leaker other than Snowden (Richard Stiennon/securitycurrent)

By Richard Stiennon

This morning a partial analysis of the NSA’s XKEYSCORE code was published in Germany. Jacob Applebaum, an evangelist for the The Onion Project (TOR), was one of the authors.

The report details specific rules written for one of the NSA’s data collection tools, XKEYSCORE, which collects the IP addresses of TOR bridges, and users of the TOR network.

TOR is an anonymizing service used by many human rights activists and dissidents around the world to access the Internet and escape persecution from their governments, like China. It is also reportedly highly targeted by the NSA.

One of the amazing offshoots of today’s story is that first Cory Doctorow speculated that the revealed source code came from a second leaker, not Snowden:

“Another expert said that s/he believed that this leak may come from a second source, not Edward Snowden, as s/he had not seen this in the original Snowden docs; and had seen other revelations that also appeared independent of the Snowden materials. If that's true, it's big news, as Snowden was the first person to ever leak docs from the NSA. The existence of a potential second source means that Snowden may have inspired some of his former colleagues to take a long, hard look at the agency's cavalier attitude to the law and decency.”

This was quickly backed up by a statement from Bruce Schneier, who has worked directly with Glenn Greenwald to help analyze the Snowden trove specifically in relation to the subverting of encryption algorithms.

Schneier posted on his site:

“And, since Cory said it, I do not believe that this came from the Snowden documents. I also don't believe the TAO catalog came from the Snowden documents. I think there's a second leaker out there.”

In other words Schneier apparently is confirming that he had not seen the TAO ANT Catalog in the Snowden collection, which he keeps on a separate laptop that he has never connected to the Internet.

A second NSA leak spells big trouble for the surveillance state.

Sunrise Calendar announces new Mac client with offline mode, third-party app integration

Just a few weeks after rolling out a major update its iOS apps, Sunrise Calendar today announced the first version of Sunrise for Mac. Sunrise for Mac includes a variety of features and capabilities, many of which are similar to what you’d find in the company’s iOS apps. On OS X, the app takes almost all of its design cues from the iOS client with color-coded events, although the team notes that the Mac client was built “specifically for the desktop.”

Sunrise for Mac also has an offline mode, meaning that you’ll still be able to view your schedule without an internet connection. The app also supports native Mac notification integration, in addition to synchronization between the Sunrise apps on iPhone and iPad. Finally, Sunrise for Mac supports the recently announced third-party app integration. The app can connect to Songkick, Evernote, Tripit, Github, Producteev, and Asana. Songkick integration, for instance, allows you to easily add the tour dates of your favorites bands and artists to your calendar. Evernote support allows you to sync your reminders with your calendar, in addition to having the ability to edit them in Sunrise.

Beautiful design built specifically for desktop
Full offline mode
Native Mac notifications for reminders
Synchronization between all your Sunrise apps (mobile and desktop)
Apps: connect Evernote, Tripit, Foursquare, Asana, Github, Songkick, Producteev directly from the Mac app and enjoy these apps in your calendar. (more info)

In other calendar/journaling news, Day One announced today that its iOS client is now free for everyone. Day One is a journaling client for iOS that has been the recipient of numerous design awards from Apple. The app was previously $5 on the App Store, but now you can get it for totally free. Sunrise for Mac is also available for free on the Mac App Store now.

Charles River Ventures Raises $393 Million For Its 16th Fund (Colleen Taylor/TechCrunch)

Charles River Ventures, the early stage venture capital firm that’s jointly based in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Silicon Valley, has raised $393 million for a new investment fund, according to documents filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The fund, Charles River Partnership XVI, is the sixteenth to be raised by the 44-year-old firm (hence the XVI name, of course.) It’s a step up in size from Charles River’s fifteenth fund, which raised <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/28/charles-river-ventures-raises-375-million-for-its-15th-fund/ in February 2012.

Charles River, which is primarily focused on Series A investments, has had a string of solid hits: CRV was the first investor in Twitter, and was the lead investor in Yammer and Zendesk, to name just a few.

I’ve reached out to the firm for more details on the new fund, and will report back with any information I receive.

Facebook Messenger finally arrives on iPad, complete with calling and stickers

Facebook today updated its Messenger for iOS app finally adding a full iPad version. The iPad version works like the version found on the iPhone and iPod touch but takes advantage of the much larger display by showing more content like message threads while in other messages. The iPad version also features the same calling features found on the iPhone and iPod touch versions. Facebook’s various supported sticker packs are also featured on the messaging app for iPad.

Previously, messaging using Facebook was limited to the official Facebook for iPad app, a feature somewhat buried in the general Facebook experience, while the social network has continued to focus on new features in the dedicated messaging app. With today’s launch, chatting via Facebook on the tablet is a greatly improved experience.

Below is the change log for Facebook Messenger 7.0:

What’s New:
Now available for iPad!
Videos you shoot in Messenger can be saved to your phone’s camera roll.
It’s easier to invite more of your Facebook friends to get Messenger, too.
Plus, other fixes to make the app more reliable.

Facebook Messenger 7.0 is available today on the App Store for iPhone, iPod touch, and finally iPad. Download it here.

Soundcloud continues to push boundaries of privacy policies; enables Universal to screen ... (Valerie Lee/Dancing Astronaut)

Following the forced decision of artists like Kaskade to leave behind Soundcloud as their go-to forum for music sharing, like clockwork, the platform has provided the evidence and demonstrated exactly why the Grammy-nominated producer will be the first of many to soon follow suit. A few days ago, Soundcloud discreetly updated their Cookie and Privacy Policy that received much less of an embellished roll out than their widely ill-received iPhone application update. Though the policy change was largely eclipsed by the numerous blog and social media posts announcing the application update, a few significant changes may be the final push for users to start looking for a new sharing platform.

As Do Androids Dance reveals, the Cookie and Privacy Policy update – which becomes effective July 17th – explains that for those connected to Soundcloud via a Facebook or Google+ account, information about you will automatically be mined, collected, and monitored. Soundcloud will graciously allow users to opt out of the new policy, but doing so requires you to send a snail mail note to an office in Germany and simultaneously puts you at the probable risk of Soundcloud deleting your account entirely.

Unfortunately, the Soundcloud alterations don’t stop there. One change in particular targets artists – and not those of a Kaskade or Deadmau5 caliber, both of whom are looking to construct or already using their own platforms for fans to receive music – and unsurprisingly, users were never made aware that it was happening.

Following an email conversation between DJ Brainz, a Sub.FM DJ and owner of UK garage community forum Slick N Fresh, and Soundcloud, it became evident that the platform has handed over partial control and monitoring powers to Universal. Universal Music Group is the largest music corporation in the world and includes Interscope, Def Jam, Capitol Records, and dozens more underneath the umbrella branch of UMG. As revealed through the email correspondences, Soundcloud has given Universal full-fledged access to flag accounts, remove songs, and even terminate user accounts on behalf of the platform.

While branches of UMG labels like Interscope continue to share music on Soundcloud and thrive unrestrained by policy changes, the question of where the line is drawn begins to surface amongst users and artists familiar with the platform. To some, it has already become clear that Soundcloud is no longer a viable atmosphere for music hosting or sharing, and it seems likely that many more will continue to follow in the footsteps of Kaskade’s recent struggle with the platform.

Video shows how 4.7-inch iPhone 6 screen will feel in the hand

We showed you photos a few days ago of what is claimed to be the display covers for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, which appeared to have slightly curved edges. Chinese sire iFanr (via NWE) has now posted a video of the same part, giving a sense of how the larger phone will feel in the hand compared to the iPhone 5s …

We’ve of course seen a number of such comparisons with mockups, but this is the first with what is claimed to be a genuine part.

While Apple has issued developer guidelines on how to facilitate one-handed use with a larger screen, the video makes it pretty clear that the company is leaving behind Steve Jobs’ insistence that your thumb must be able to comfortably reach all four corners of the screen. With a screen of this size, you’re likely going to be using it two-handed at least some of the time.

This video follows similar footage of what is said to be the genuine back of the same 4.7-inch phone. We’re expecting the iPhone 6 to be significantly thinner than current iPhones, and for the flat edges to be replaced with rounded ones.

While there has been considerable concern expressed about the highly-visible antenna cut-outs seen in many mockups, Japanese paper Nikkei has suggested that they will be far more subtle in the real thing, polished glass blending in with the metal back. A render from the Ukraine provided a sense of how this might look.

Automotive Grade Linux Released for Open Source Cars (Christopher Tozzi/The VAR Guy)

Linux, the open source operating system, shifted gears into a relatively new ecosystem this week with the first release of Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), a Linux distribution tailored for cars in the Internet of Things age.

AGL is a collaborative project sponsored by the Linux Foundation that brings together a host of partners from the automotive industry, communications, computing hardware, academia and other sectors. The first release of the open source operating system, which appeared June 30 and is available for free online, is based on Tizen IVI, a Linux-based platform designed to provide operating system solutions for a broad range of devices, from smartphones to TVs to cars to laptops.

In its first release, AGL provides a series of features and applications tailored for deployment in cars and other vehicles, including:

Home Screen Dashboard Google Maps HVAC Media Playback News Reader (AppCarousel) Audio Controls Bluetooth Phone Smart Device Link Integration

The Linux Foundation and its partners participating in the AGL project hope the solution will help to ensure that the "connected" cars of the future use open source software to deliver the next generation of entertainment, navigation and other tools for use inside vehicles. "Openness and collaboration are key to accelerating the development of a common, standard automotive platform so the industry can more quickly achieve its vision of delivering the connected car," said Dan Cauchy, general manager of Automotive, The Linux Foundation.

Cauchy added that the Linux Foundation expects AGL development to continue steadily following this first release, and that collaborators hope to introduce "a number of additional capabilities and features in subsequent releases."

Microsoft surrenders the 23 domains it recently confiscated from No-IP (Dan Goodin/Ars Technica)

Techmeme

Microsoft surrenders the 23 domains it recently confiscated from No-IP (Dan Goodin/Ars Technica)

Microsoft has surrendered the 23 domain names it confiscated from dynamic domain hosting service No-IP.com, a move that begins the process of restoring millions of connections that went dark as a result of the highly controversial legal action.

At the time this post was being prepared, No-IP had recovered 18 of the domains and was in the process of reacquiring the remaining five from Public Interest Registry, the registry for Internet addresses ending in .org, No-IP spokeswoman Natalie Goguen told Ars. People who rely on No-IP subdomains that don't end in .org should already have service restored, as long as the domain name service (DNS) server they use has been updated to reflect Wednesday's transfer. Users who are still experiencing connectivity problems should try using DNS services from Google or OpenDNS, which have both updated their lookups to incorporate the transfers.

Further Reading

Microsoft confiscated the No-IP domains in late June through a secretive legal maneuver that didn't give the dynamic DNS provider an opportunity to oppose the motion in court. Microsoft's ex parte request was part of a legal action designed to dismantle two sprawling networks of infected Windows computers that were abusing No-IP in an attempt to evade takedown. As partial justification for the request, Microsoft lawyers argued No-IP didn't follow security best practices.

Swaths of the Internet broken

On Monday, Microsoft said it planned to use its Azure cloud platform to block malicious No-IP subdomains that were the subject of the court action while permitting legitimate subdomains to connect as normal. In practice, dynamic DNS hosting was wiped out for all, or virtually all, No-IP users. In the process, more than 4 million connections went dark, Reno, Nevada-based No-IP said.

Some defenders of Microsoft's actions have claimed that the consequences of the domain confiscations were limited to administrators who should know better than to rely on dynamic DNS hosting to make their networks work. In fact, large numbers of end users rely on such services from No-IP as well as other providers. Home routers, video surveillance, and security systems, for example, often benefit from having an Internet-connected address that updates each time an IP address changes, making them perfect for No-IP. Players of the online game Minecraft often use dynamic DNS to host servers that allow people to play in real time. The Microsoft seizure reportedly also took down playing of Chess2: The Sequel.

Further Reading

In fairness to Microsoft, aggressive legal actions that confiscate domain names have played a key role in ridding the Internet of some of the most abusive and resilient botnets. The company's legal department deserves credit for innovating a maneuver that has made the Internet a safer place. These draconian actions, however, should be taken only as a last resort. Microsoft has yet to respond to No-IP allegations that no one at Microsoft ever privately complained of the abuse. It that's true, it's hard to conclude this episode wasn't an overreach and a gross abuse of the legal process.

Thieves in Brazil use malware to hijack online payments, steal billions in aggregate (Brian Krebs/Krebs on Security)

With the eyes of the world trained on Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, it seems a fitting time to spotlight a growing form of computer fraud that’s giving Brazilian banks and consumers a run for their money. Today’s post looks at new research into a mostly small-time cybercrime practice that in the aggregate appears to have netted thieves the equivalent of billions of dollars over the past two years.

A boleto.

A boleto.

At issue is the “boleto” (officially “Boleto Bancario”), a popular payment method in Brazil that is used by consumers and for most business-to-business payments. Brazilians can use boletos to complete online purchases via their bank’s Web site, but unlike credit card payments — which can be disputed and reversed — payments made via boletos are not subject to chargebacks and can only be reverted by bank transfer.

Brazil has an extremely active and talented cybercrime underground, and increasingly Brazilian organized  crime gangs are setting their sights on boleto users who bank online. This is typically done through malware that lies in wait until the user of the hacked PC visits their bank’s site and fills out the account information for the recipient of a boleto transaction. In this scenario, the unwitting victim submits the transfer for payment and the malware modifies the request by substituting a recipient account that the attackers control.

Many of the hijacked boleto transactions are low-dollar amounts, but in the aggregate these purloined payments can generate an impressive income stream for even a small malware gang. On Tuesday, for example, a source forwarded me a link to a Web-based control panel for a boleto-thieving botnet (see screenshot below); in this operation, we can see that the thieves had hijacked some 383 boleto transactions between February 2014 and the end of June, but had stolen the equivalent of nearly USD $250,000 during that time.

The records kept by a boleto-stealing botnet. Next to the date and time is the account of the intended recipient of the transfer; the "linea alterada" column shows the accounts used by the thieves to accept diverted payments. "Valor" refers to the amount, expressed in Brazilian Real.

But a recent discovery by researchers at RSA, the security division of EMC, exposes far more lucrative and ambitious boleto banditry. RSA says the fraud ring it is tracking — known as the “Bolware” operation — affects more than 30 different banks in Brazil, and may be responsible for up to $3.75 billion USD in losses. RSA arrived at this estimate based on the discovery of a similar botnet control panel that tracked nearly a half-million fraudulent transactions.

Most Brazilian banks require online banking customers to install a security plug-in that hooks into the user’s browser. The plug-ins are designed to help block malware attacks. But according to RSA, the Bolware gang’s malware successfully disables those security plug-ins, leaving customers with a false sense of security when banking online.

The malware also harvests usernames and passwords from victim PCs, credentials that are thought to be leveraged in spreading the malware via spam to the victim’s contacts. RSA said this fraud gang appears to have infected more than 192,000 PCs, and stolen at least 83,000 sets of user credentials.

RSA notes that the miscreants responsible for the Bolware operation appear to have used just over 8,000 separate accounts to receive the stolen funds. That’s roughly 7,997 more accounts than were used by the boleto bandits responsible for the diverted transactions in the boleto botnet control panel I discovered.

Researchers at RSA suggest that Brazilians who wish to transact in boletos online should consider using a mobile device to manage their boleto transactions, noting that boleto-thieving malware currently is not capable of altering the data stored in the barcode of each hijacked boleto order — at least for the time being.

“As the malware does not alter the barcode (for now), the safest approach is to use mobile banking applications available on smart phones (for now, immune to this malware) to read the barcode and to make payments,” the company said in its report (PDF) on this crime wave.

Microsoft is planning its own entry into the wearable market, but won’t make it exclusive to Windows devices, according to a report from Paul Thurrott. The device won’t be a watch, but a simple fitness band that can sync with multiple smartphone platforms, including Windows, iOS, and Android.

The company is said to be aiming for a Q4 release with pricing similar to that of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear. No word yet on whether the hardware will work with Apple’s own Health software or will require an app created by Microsoft.
